Requirements to Rent a Motorbike in Bali
Everything you need to know before renting a scooter or motorbike in Bali. Documents, licenses, deposits, and practical tips for a smooth rental experience.
Required Documents
Indonesian Citizens (WNI)
- KTP (Kartu Tanda Penduduk) – original, must be valid
- SIM C (motorcycle driving license) – must be valid and match the vehicle class
- Deposit or collateral (varies by unit and duration)
Foreign Tourists (WNA)
- Passport – original, must be valid
- International Driving Permit (IDP) Category A – required by Indonesian law
- Home country motorcycle license – must be valid in addition to IDP
- Deposit or collateral (typically higher than for locals)
Driving License Requirements
What license do I need?
In Indonesia, a SIM C is required to ride a motorcycle (up to 250cc). Foreign visitors must carry both a valid IDP (Category A) and their home country license. Riding without a proper license is illegal and voids insurance coverage.
⚠️ Important: An International Driving Permit from your home country is NOT valid in Indonesia without your original national license. You must carry both at all times.
Age Requirements
The minimum age to rent and ride a motorbike in Bali is 17 years old with a valid SIM C. Some rental providers may set a higher minimum age of 21 for premium or high-displacement bikes.
Deposit & Collateral
How much is the deposit?
Deposit amounts depend on the vehicle and rental duration. Typically:
- Small scooters (Beat, Genio, Scoopy): Rp200.000 – Rp500.000 or original KTP
- Mid-range (Vario, PCX, NMAX): Rp500.000 – Rp1.000.000
- Premium bikes (XMAX, big bikes): Rp1.000.000 – Rp3.000.000
- Monthly rentals: deposit may be higher, negotiable via WhatsApp
Deposit is fully refunded upon return of the vehicle in good condition. No deductions unless there is damage beyond normal wear.
Tips for Foreigners Renting in Bali
1. Get your IDP before arriving
Apply for an International Driving Permit in your home country before traveling. It's difficult to get one in Bali.
2. Always carry your documents
Police checks are common in tourist areas like Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud. Keep your passport, IDP, and license with you when riding.
3. Take photos before riding
Photograph the motorbike from all angles before riding off. This protects you from false damage claims when returning.
4. Wear a helmet — it's the law
Helmet use is mandatory in Bali. Not wearing one means a fine up to Rp250.000 and police will stop you. We provide 2 free helmets with every rental.
5. Check insurance coverage
Basic rentals typically don't include accident insurance. Ask about coverage options when booking via WhatsApp.
